DYLANS ADVENTURES IN THE CRYSTAL CITY

DYLAN'S NEW FRIENDS

Dylan woke up early this morning, he was really excited about what he was going to do today. Auntie was taking him for a walk in the woods and she had promised to introduce him to some of her friends.
Dylan always enjoyed being with Auntie, she would tell him about and show him things that most people didn't even notice. He wondered, licking his lips remembering the last visit, what special treats Auntie had packed in their lunch basket. Dylan quickly got up and remembering what Auntie had said he dressed in his comfortable clothes. He grabbed his socks and giggled as he remembered wearing odd socks to Aunties, she had said "as long as they are dry and clean, it doesn't matter" they had laughed together about what fun that was. On went his socks one red and one blue, he smiled as he knew this would make Auntie laugh.

Dylan heard Mommy calling "breakfast is ready" he ran full blast to the top of the stairs, Mommy then said "be careful kiddo, slow down," He carefully walked down the stairs and then ran into the kitchen to give mommy a big hug. "What are you so excited about" asked Mommy, with a knowing twinkle in her eye. Dylan smiled and said "Oh mommy you know what today is" she laughed and said "Saturday?" Dylan giggled and said "I am going to the woods with Auntie." Mommy smiled and gave Dylan a big hug, "you have fun today OK" I will Mommy I will. Dylan sat at the table and began to gobble down his breakfast, "hold it kiddo" said Mommy, "you will get an upset stomach eating so fast." Dylan slowed down and smiled at Mommy, he did not want anything to spoil his outing today. Dylan had just finished breakfast when the doorbell rang "ding dong" He ran to the door and flung it open Auntie stood there smiling "so are you all ready for our adventure?" "Yep!" said Dylan. Mommy came over with his boots and then looked at his feet "why are you wearing odd socks Dylan, don't you have lots of clean pairs?" Auntie and Dylan started to laugh "I think these odd socks were for me" said Auntie. Mommy shrugged and smiled "OK, you two behave" Auntie and Dylan looked at each other and burst out laughing again. "Go on, get out of here go and enjoy your day."
said Mommy.

Dylan jumped into Aunties car and buckled up, he noticed the basket on the seat next to him, he reached over to sneak a peek at what Auntie had packed. "Boo" said Auntie from the front seat, Dylan jumped She was looking in the mirror at him, Her sparkling blue eyes were filled with laughter as she said "now that would spoil the surprise wouldn't it" Dylan giggled. Auntie then turned on her relaxing music and off they went. Dylan watched as the busy streets slowly turned into fields and trees "how far are we going" asked Dylan, "won't be long, how about we play a game?" said auntie. "What sort of game" asked Dylan. "Well lets see' said Auntie, "see if you can answer this question, what does yellow feel like" Dylan giggled "yellow is a colour Auntie" "I know" said auntie "but what does it feel like" Dylan sat thinking for a moment and said sunshine, "it feels like sunshine". "yes, yes it does" said auntie "and what else do you feel of when you think of yellow?" " warm just like when we sit in front of your wood stove with the dancing yellow flames" said Dylan.
"What does yellow smell like?" Dylan giggled again "hm-mm Lemons !! it smells like lemons"  "and what else?" asked Auntie,  "flowers, pretty flowers" said Dylan. "What does yellow taste like Dylan? asked Auntie, bananas, I like bananas! "so what did you learn about yellow?" asked Auntie. "that it is more than just a colour Auntie?" "yes indeed Dylan, yes indeed." Dylan sat quietly thinking about more things that were yellow, he was so deep in thought that he didn't even realize that they had turned down a dirt road until Auntie went over a big bump. " Almost there" said Auntie.

Auntie grabbed the lunch basket and Dylan put on his backpack, off they went hand in hand down the path to through the trees. "It is really quiet here in the woods Auntie" said Dylan, "quiet?" questioned Auntie "listen more closely, they stopped and Dylan listened, birds were singing the wind rustled in the tree tops, crickets and bugs were making all kinds of noises, "wow" said Dylan "and I though we were all alone."
They continued on their path and a new noise caught his attention "what was that asked Dylan?" "I think you will see just around this corner" replied Auntie. As the path widened into a clearing Dylan could see a pond. The walked quietly towards the water "croak" the noise went again Dylan's eyes widened as a large frog sat in front of him. Then splash the frog jumped off his lilly pad into the beautiful clear water. Dylan looked around "where are your friends Auntie" Auntie smiled and said "all around us Dylan" Dylan was puzzled by this as he could see no one else. "Lets get the blanket and get comfortable shall we" said Auntie. Auntie spread out the blanket and placed the basket in the centre, Dylan now sat waiting for Auntie to explain about
her friends.

Auntie smiled as a large dragonfly came down and landed on her shoulder "hello my friend" said Auntie. Dylan looked at Auntie with a curious expression "friend?" he said. "Why, yes Dylan" replied Auntie "the insects, the birds and animals, the trees and flowers are all alive and they are just as much a part of this world as we are." A robin started singing above them in the tree, "hello my friend" said Auntie. Dylan looked up and saw the robin looking right back at him " he is looking at me Auntie "said Dylan Auntie asked Dylan if he would like to meet the robin "Oh yes replied Dylan" "Sit quietly and in your mind ask him to come closer" said Auntie. They both sat very quietly looking up at the robin, limb by limb the robin came closer until he was just above their heads,  he started to sing, his song was so beautiful that Dylan started to cry. Then with a hop and jump off the robin flew into the forest.  Dylan looked at Auntie who was smiling at seeing his tears " I like your friends Auntie"
he said.

Dylan's tummy growled loudly, "well now we had better take care of that" said Auntie "or you will be scaring off all my friends" the two of them laughed as his tummy let out another loud growl. From the basket full of goodies Auntie began to pull fresh and dried fruit, bottles of juice, sunflower seeds and nuts, a vegetable plate with her special dip and fresh water in her painted glass containers. They sat peacefully munching away on the treats listening and watching all of the activity that was happening around them. A brilliant red cardinal now sang happily from the tree tops, butterflies and busy bee's buzzed the the flowers, an occasional croak came from the pond  "it is like they are all singing for us" said Dylan, "they are indeed said Auntie, "they are indeed."
